In Redding, located in the northern part of the state near the Oregon border, the Chainless Downhill Mountain Bike Race is an exhilarating ride that occurs every fall and spring. Participants are required to remove the chains from their bikes and careen downhill without pedaling. Billed as the “mullet-wearing stepbrother of the cross-county race,” the event attracts cyclists from all over and who describe the experience as being “1,300 feet of pure flow and concentration.” Proceeds raised from the event benefit the Redding Trail Alliance, which builds, maintains and advocates for progressive, diverse and high-quality trails that promote community.
